Colorimeter: An instrument for measuring color. In 1955 the AGS developed an electronic colorimeter. It uses a selenium cell that can measure the relative transmission of yellow and blue light by a diamond.

Like the Electronic Colorimeter, the Remission Spectrophotometer measures the light transmitted by a gemstone. Not only blue and yellow wave-lengths but the whole visible spectrum can be measured by means of a monochromator.
Using a Sarin Diamond Colorimeter DC3000 (aka Gran Colorimeter), jewelers and gem labs can accurately provide a 'color typing' printout of a diamond's color grading that is compatible with AGS, GIA-GEM, IGI, and HRD grading scales.
AGS Color Grade: The AGS Color Scale is based on the original colorimeter invented by Robert M. Shipley Jr. The old AGS scale had only eleven color grades 0 to10, which was then updated with point increments.
Most Jewelers though, do not have the luxury of these controlled settings and use Colorimeters or Spetrophotometers to analyze Color instead.
