Cullinan Diamond is a pear shaped diamond that is acknowledged to be the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever discovered in the world and has a body mass of 3,106.75 carats (621.35 g).

The Cullinan Diamonds

Cullinan Diamond: The largest diamond found so far in its rough form. In 1905 it was mined at the Premier Mine in South Africa. It was cut into many stone by Joseph Asscher of Amsterdam and it is also called the "Star of Africa".

Asscher, JosephJoseph Asscher was an eminent diamond cutter who cut the 3,106 carat Cullinan diamond. Asscher worked in Amsterdam. In 1902, his company, the Asscher Diamond Co.

The Star of Africa (also called the Cullinan diamond) is the largest diamond yet found, weighing 3,106 carats (roughly 1.3 pounds) in its rough form. It was mined at the Premier Mine in South Africa in 1905.

Named The Cullinan Diamond it weighed a whopping 3,106.75 carats. This same mine also produced the Golden Jubilee diamond which weighed in at 545.67 carats. In 2003, this mine, owned by De Beers was renamed The Cullinan Diamond Mine.

The largest known faceted diamond is the Cullinan Diamond (530.20 carats); the smallest weighs 0.0008 carats and has 58 facets. As for large rough diamonds, a list made in 1970 shows 24 of over 500 carats and 24 between 400 and 500 carats.

Asscher, Joseph: An eminent diamond cutter from Amsterdam who cut the 3,106 carat Cullinan diamond. In 1902 the Asscher Diamond Co. developed and patented the Asscher cut.
