Overview: Demantoid is the name given to the rich green variety of Andradite garnet. The gem was first discovered in Russia and the name is derived from its diamond-like adamantine luster.
DEMANTOID GARNET
Demantoid garnets are valuable green, very lustrous garnets with a cubic crystalline structure. They are a rare variety of andradite. Demantoid garnets have characteristic inclusions that look like horsetails.

Many rank as their favorite Garnet the green Demantoid, so called because it possesses more dispersion than that of a diamond (Dutch "demant", meaning diamond-like), the rarest and most expensive of all Garnets.

Andradite grossular garnet is not enhanced.
Gemstones like black opal, jadeite, demantoid garnet, pariba tourmaline, alexandrite, pink topaz, chrysoberyl cat's-eye and fancy colored sapphires.
Uvarovite and demantoid are also green varieties. Pyrope garnets are purplish red, orangy red, crimson, or dark red. Spessartite garnets range from yellow and orange through red to reddish brown to dark black/brown.
Andradite garnet is usually black and of no interest to the gem trade, but one variety called "Demantoid" is a lively green. It is a little on the softside and very brittle so it needs good protection in jewelry.
Green andradite (demantoid) has been called the ‘the emerald of the Ural’ and is one of the most prized of garnet varieties. Topazolite is a golden yellow variety and melanite is a black variety.
