Dial
The face of a watch.

Gasket: a rubber or plastic ring that seals the internal works of the watch against dust, moisture and water.

The plate, or face fixed behind the hands of a watch, marked with divisions, numerals or symbols to indicate time by movement of the hands.

The dial of the measuring instrument shows a zone which is valid for a special gem variety, however, some over-lapping can occur. The result is not read off a scale with refractive index number, but off a scale showing possible variety: of gemstone.


Dial (Face)
The front display of a watch that includes the markings and hands. It is covered by the crystal and enclosed within the case.

By adjusting a dial indicator (protractor) the gem-cutter can control the degree of cutting angle to a tolerance measured in hundredths of an inch. The image above (bottom, center) shows a rough gemstone attached to a dop stick.

Fine watches are designed by artisans and craftspeople who fashion case, bracelet, dial and sometimes gems into not just a functional timepiece, but a work of art.
It's a potential heirloom. Your watch can be an investment in beauty and value.

Markers:On the dial of a watch, markers are used to indicate the 12 hour increments. A marker can be a number, a line, a dot or a gemstone. Sometimes there are no markers or only markers at certain hours.

Traditionally, watches have displayed the time in analogue form, with a numbered dial upon which are mounted at least a rotating hour hand and a longer, rotating minute hand.

The two most helpful tools are the gauge wheel also called the American Standard wire gauge and the dial caliper. They measure body jewelry accurately from 30 gauges to 0 gauges.

Duo (or dual) display
A watch dial with both analogue and digital displays. This means that you can have a conventional dial with hands to show the time and also extra features such as an alarm or stopwatch.

Bezels can have straight edges, scalloped edges, or can be molded into any shape to accommodate the stone. A watch bezel is the upper part of the case surrounding the dial. They can be set with diamonds or other gemstones.
