dop A cutter's holding device used while polishing diamond. The dop would be held by the tang. In some automated diamond cutting systems the dop and tang are incorporated into one design.

A dop-stick is a short piece of thin dowel which is used as a handle. A rub is stuck onto the end of a "dop-stick" with jeweller's wax.

The dop is reinserted in the faceting handpiece and carefully aligned, and the same steps (rough cut, fine cut, polish) are performed on the other side of the stone.

The polisher fixes the cut stone firmly in a metallic holder called a dop, which is cleverly designed to hold the stone with much of one side of it exposed.

The spinning lap provides the grinding and polishing surface, the wooden "dop" sticks to which the rough is adhered, serve to hold the stone in position as various cuts are made.

Shaping: The shaper uses a special type of heat activated resin to affix the pre-formed gemstone onto a metal rod, commonly called a dop stick.

The process is started by adhering the crystal to the dop stick and pre-forming the basic shape of the gemstone.
Cutting the emerald into a rough shape readies the emerald for the long polishing process.

Bruting is done by affixing the diamond to a dop stick, and shaping the stone with a diamond-tipped cutting tool (the brute).
