FELDSPAR
Overview: The name "feldspar" comes from "field stone", because when feldspar weathers, it releases large amounts of plant nutrients, such as potassium, which enrich the soil.

The feldspar group has nine species; there are varieties within some of the species, and there are also intergrowth of species resulting from the unmixing of solid solutions. All of these species, varieties, and intergrowths can be gemstones.

The name feldspar comes from the German feldt spat, meaning “field stone,' because when feldspar weathers, it releases plant nutrients, such as potassium, which enrich soil.

The feldspars are a group of related minerals which, as a group are the most abundant minerals in the earth's crust. However, only a tiny percentage of the feldspars fall in the "gem quality" range.

Sunstone is a variety of Labradorite feldspar that generally shows an opaque "schiller" effect where the metallic inclusions reflect light in a blaze of color. However, it can also come in clear stones which are suitable for faceting.

Feldspar is a ubiquitous mineral that, usually in the form of small grains, makes up 50-60% of the content of the rocks of the Earth's crust.

The feldspar crystals have a propensity for multiple and complex twinning and is probably the orthoclase member of this silicate mineral group.

Aventurine Feldspar is also called Sunstone. This gemstone varies from golden to orange to red-brown, and can be transparent or translucent.

Aventurine feldspar is also called Sunstone (a variety of oligoclase). This gemstone varies from golden to orange to red-brown, and can be transparent or translucent.

Plagioclase Feldspar Group
The Plagioclase series is a group of related feldspar minerals that basically have the same formula but vary in their percentage of sodium and calcium.

A variety of feldspar known as the rainbow moonstone is also found in India and Madagascar. In a rainbow moonstone, the adularescent sheen ranges from pink to purple to blue to peach to yellow. A single rainbow moonstone may exhibit all these colours.

Amazonite A green or blue-green member of the Feldspar clan. Inspires truth, sincerity, honor, self-love, communication, eloquence, integrity, trust, clairvoyance, clarity, prophecy and openness.

This brilliantly iridescent material is regarded as the world's most beautiful form of labradorite (a variety of plagioclase feldspar). Specifically, "spectrolite" is a trade name for high-grade labradorite found only in Finland.

These include quartz (SiO2), the minerals of the feldspar group (orthoclase, K(AlSi3O8), albite Na(AlSi3O8), and anorthite (Ca(Al2Si2O8)) and muscovite mica (KAl2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2).
