Although now more sophisticated in their use of technology and materials, many of these flameworking tools are simply re-workings of the tools that were used widely in Murano and elsewhere in Europe for centuries.

Once in a molten state, the glass is formed by blowing and shaping with tools and hand movements. It is also known as flameworking or torchworking, as the modern practice no longer uses oil-fueled lamps.
