GIA
GIA is the abbreviation for the Gemological Institute of America. It was established in 1931 by Robert M. Shipley (a 1929 Gem-A graduate).

GIA - History
In the 1950s, the GIA developed the first internationally accepted Diamond Grading System. This system provides unbiased opinions on the quality of polished diamonds by applying uniform criteria to their grading.

GIA Report Number: Unique GIA identification number.
Laser Inscription Registry: At the request of the customer, the diamond is micro laser inscribed with its unique GIA Report Number.

GIA Color Range
Diamonds with a color grade of D, E or F are considered colorless.
Diamonds graded G, H, I and J are near colorless.

GIA Gem Lab (Gemological Institute of America)
This is considered the premiere diamond grading laboratory in the world. Most people that have shopped for a diamond will usually be familiar with this lab.

when looking for a diamond’s color use daylight from the North or tube light corrected “daylight'.

There are eleven clarity grades in the GIA system ranging from Flawless (Fl) to Imperfect 3 (I3).

To insure the best results specify that you receive a certificate from one of the following, (GIA, EGL, HRD, IGI). The first three will identify the grade of the diamond but do not address value. Generally, these three are used for loose stones.

In fact, gemological laboratories such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and American Gemological Society (AGS) will only grade diamonds that are unmounted.

If you´re trying to reach the area inside a bail, you can use the old string method we were taught at the GIA. Tie about a 1´ long piece of string to your bench pin (or anything else handy!). Moisten slightly with lighterfluid.
