Gold-plated metal has a very thin layer of gold on the surface, usually applied by the process of electroplating.

Gold-Plated and Silver-Plated
An application of gold or silver is plated to the surface of a base metal (which may be brass or steel).
Items made in this manner must meet the industry standards of .15 to .25 mils thickness.

Vermeil is Gold-plated Sterling Silver. Gold-plating of base metals such as Brass or Bronze are sometimes erroneously referred to as Vermeil. When base metals are plated with thin layers of Gold, they should be referred to as Gold plated, not Vermeil.

Q. What is gold-plated?
Gadroon: A series of small vertical, diagonal or twisted grooves applied as a border decoration on silverware.

Vermeil is gold-plated silver. Less occasionally, gold-plated bronze is referred to as vermeil.
VITREOUS
Vitreous means glass-like.

BEADED BEADS

Before the Dodges, gold-plated items, called "gilt," were created by mercury gilding. Mercury gilding, used since the Middle Ages, was a process where the gold was suspended in a mercury solution.

Danecraft is a mark used on silver and vermeil (gold-plated silver) costume jewelry produced by Felch and Company, which was founded by Victor Primavera in 1938 in Providence, Rhode Island, USA.

Cini produces jewelry made of silver and gold-plated silver (vermeil), some with colored rhinestones (in later pieces). Cini pieces are known for their beautiful workmanship, artistic designs, and intricate detail.

The other types of gold jewelry include gold-filled, gold-plated and vermeil. Gold-filled refers to a layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base (non-precious) metal; the gold content must be at least 1/20th of the total weight of the piece.

2. Opt for silver or gold-plated jewelry instead of solid gold or platinum. To a casual observer, the difference in quality is not obvious. Also, silver is perennially in style.

"Gold-filled" is a process by which a layer of gold (at least 10K) is mechanically bonded to a base metal. "Gold-plated" means that an item has a plating (or coating) of gold alloy of at least 10K, though usually less gold than in gold-filled items.

The plating layer is typically very thin with a thickness of several tens of microns (1 micron = 0.001 millimeter). When purchasing gold-plated jewelry, one has to take into account that the gold layer might be scratched or pealed off with time.

Products that have an extremely thin layer of gold, (less than .175 microns thick), applied by either dipping or burnishing the metal, but not plated.. This will wear away more quickly than pieces that are gold-plated, gold-filled, ...

A barrier metal layer is used to counter this effect. The copper is usually further plated with nickel. A gold-plated silver article is usually a silver base metal with layers of copper, nickel, and gold deposited on top of it.

This layer wears off after time, sometimes within months, before a piercing is healed, and gold-plated jewelry should therefore only be worn in piercings already healed.
