Gold plated is where a thin layer of gold is deposited onto copper or silver (to make silver gilt) by chemical or electrochemical means. Depending on how thick the gold layer is will influence how quickly the surface tarnishes.

Alternative types of gold jewelry include gold filled, gold plated and vermeil. Over time, gold plating and vermeil will wear off, requiring re-plating.
