Pure gold is relatively soft and as a consequence has durability problems. Ornate pieces of jewelry can be bent, and expensive gemstones can be lost from their settings.

Gold Purity
Gold's purity is measured in karats. The term 'Karat' is different from the term 'Carat', which is used to measure weight in gemstones. The purity of gold in karat determines its value.

Consumers are easily attracted to the beautiful non-conventional gold jewelry pieces created with colored gold.
In some cases, this gold purity is not the cheapest or mere low grade gold. If the gold is mixed with platinum or palladium to make white gold, this grade of gold can be very expensive.

Gold purity is measured in Karats (Karats with a "K" grade gold, Carats with a "C" measures the weight of diamonds and gemstones.) The Karat marking system was not widely used until around the late 1800's.
The time honored way that jewelers and gold dealers tested gold purity was by using acids and a set of test needles of known karatage.
When selecting jewelry like gold necklaces or bracelets, it's important to balance gold purity with the durability.
Karat
A measure of gold purity (ranging from 1 to 24) used to indicate how much of a piece of jewelry is gold content and how much an alloy. Gold jewelry is often stamped with a hallmark (number) indicating the karat, i.e. 750 is 18K.
Lower gold purity creates a silvery tinge and higher purity brings out more of a yellowish glow. 18kt (75% gold) and 14kt (58.3% gold) are the most common purity grades.
Gold purity can be tested with inexpensive devices that measure electrical conduction, or by the older method of gauging the extent of reaction with dilute acids.
(Note that Karat with a "K" refers to gold purity, while Carat with a "C" refers to the weight of a gemstone, e.g. a one carat diamond set in a 14 karat gold ring.) The karat number refers to the parts of pure gold per 24 in the alloy.
Gold purity is expressed in terms of karat (kt) value, and is a fraction of 24ths. 24 karat gold is 24/24 gold and is pure gold. Gold having a hardness of 2.
In other words, 75% gold purity. "Karat" is the North American spelling for carat (hence the confusion sometomes between the 2 words. See "carat" for more information.

A carat is also 1/5th of a gram. It is also 1/14200th parts of an ounce. This is a very small unit of weight effecting price in a very big way. Karat, is the measure of gold purity. It has nothing to do with stone weight.
