Greenstone is another name for nephrite, a semi-precious stone and a variety of jade. Nephrite is slightly softer that jadeite and is often veined; it is used in carvings, for making beautiful bowls and vases.

Nephrite is the more common of the two minerals commonly known as jade. The amount of iron present determines its color.

In New Zealand, nephrite jade (aka greenstone) was worked for centuries by Maori tribesmen to fashion ornaments and weaponry, and is still widely used to make carved jewelry. The Maori word for greenstone is pounamu.

Known as "pounamu" or greenstone it was used for weapons, tools and ornamental and religious objects. Some of the most advanced nephrite carving in the world has been done in recent years by New Zealanders using some of the superb local material.

Nephrite is a semi-precious stone, a variety of jade (sometimes called greenstone). Two different minerals are known as jade, jadeite and nephrite.

In New Zealand, where it is known as greenstone or pounamu, nephrite was fashioned for centuries by Maori to make weapons and ornaments, and is still widely used to make carved jewellery although the mining of it is restricted and closely monitored.

For about 3,000 years jade has been highly prized by the Native Americans of British Columbia, Canada who called it “greenstone' and for centuries the New Zealand Maori have made beautiful nephrite carvings.

itself comes from Ceylon or as it is now known as Sri Lankan word "Turumali", it means "gemstone" or sometimes referred as "mixed parcel" as it contains variety of minerals. It is also called "Verdalite" which comes from Latin, known as "greenstone".
