Growth lines
The boundaries of inhomogenities which result from changing conditions during the crystallization process of the diamond are called growth lines or grain lines.

Growth Phenomena
Growth phenomena such as starts and stops during crystal formation sometimes provide interior interest.
Growth or Grain Lines: These can be considered internal flaws, and can often be seen only by rotating the diamond very slowly. They can appear and disappear almost instantaneously. They appear as small lines or planes within diamond.
Growth rate: Like the other pearls from Australia, Indonesia and Philippines, the growth rate of the Burmese golden pearl is faster than other colors.
Growth/Grain lines: An imperfection within the diamond. They are created by an irregular crystallization when the diamond is formed and can be colorless, white or colored.
Growth zoning
Straight, angular growth zoning parallel to the faces along which it formed; irregular 'treacle'-like swirls in other directions. Distinctive are the blue color zones intermingled in most stones, similar to Vietnamese rubies.
