HALLMARKS: An official mark first adopted in England. The mark is incised, punched, or stamped on gold or silver to show quality and to signify purity of metal according to "sterling" or "carat" standard.

Hallmarks should not be confused with a manufacturing stamp which is unique to the manufacturer.
What is Fine Gold?

European hallmarks are legally required, dating to the Early Middle Ages. Marks are not officially required in the US but are used by custom and practice. Marks can indicate metal purity, the maker, country of manufacture, or the date.

Platinum hallmarks usually indicate the amounts of platinum and other metals present in the alloy expressed in parts per thousand. A hallmark of 900ppt denotes 90% platinum and 10% other metals.

Purity & Hallmarks
While there are accepted purity hallmarks for 850, 900, 950, and 999 parts per 1000, the majority of our platinum jewellery is 95 percent pure platinum combined with 5 percent iridium, palladium, ruthenium or other alloys.

Traditionally, hallmarks are stamped, or "struck" into the metal using a steel punch, but laser-marking is now replacing the punch method by many Assay offices.

In addition to the quality marks described above, trademarks and hallmarks give you information about your silver purchase. Your professional jeweler can explain all of these markings to you in greater detail.

Hallmark: A form of consumer protection against fraud, hallmarks are simply marks stamped onto a precious metal by a legally appointed official after assaying to denote the amount of precious metal contained in a piece.

Remember to check the inside of the band for hallmarks and engraving and to work around them. The shank is bent so the ends come together to make a tight seam, and here again it is important to file the surfaces so they make a clean joint.

Hallmarks also indicate the maker of the piece. In Britain, a hallmark is required by law and it is illegal to incorrectly mark the metal content.

Palladium has many of the same properties as platinum such as its resistance to corrosion and versatile applications in jewelry designs. Pieces made with Palladium bear the hallmarks of Pd950 or Pd500.

In 1918, when Carl Fishel joined the company, they renamed the company Trifari, Krussman and Fishel (their hallmark was T.F.K.). Later hallmarks include Trifari (in capital letters) and Trifari (in capital letters with a small crown above the T).
