The Heishi strings are truly a work of art - skilled and patient craftsmanship. A good string of Heishi looks like a snake and feels like silk when you run it through your fingers.

 


Heishi: (hee-shee). The oldest form of jewelry in New Mexico, pre-dating the introduction of metals.

HEISHI
Heishi (pronounced he-she) is jewelry made from disk-shaped beads of shell (or turquoise, lapis lazuli, and other stones). Each bead begins as a tiny flat piece of shell (or stone). A tiny stringing hole is drilled though the fragment.

Heishi (hee-shee) The literal meaning of heishi is "shell" and specifically refers to pieces of shell which have been drilled and ground into beads.

Heishi: a type of disk bead that is usually flat, but sometimes slightly puffed.

Heishi - Literally meaning, "shell," heishi (hee shee) is considered the most ancient jewelry form of New Mexico and is linked to the Santo Domingo and San Felipe Pueblo Indians.

Heishi (pronounced Hee-Shee) is a term that was originally used by Pueblo Indians to describe shell disks of a consistent size that had been drilled and strung as a necklace, creating a rope-like tube that was as fluid as a serpent when it moved.

Heishe Heishe or heishi beads are small disc or tube shaped beads usually made of stone, shell or wood. They were first made from shell by Native Americans of the New Mexico area.

Liquid silver: The term given to strands of small silver beads which were made by carefully slicing tubes of sterling silver into 1/8" pieces and stringing them together. A form of Heishi.

Produced by drawing small ribbons of sterling silver through a draw plate that forms a thin, silver tube. These tubes are carefully cut & hand strung together. Liquid silver is an example of the Native American jewelry making technique of Heishi.
