HESSONITE
Hessonite (also called "cinnamon stone") is a cinnamon-brown to orange gemstone variety of grossular garnet. Hessonite's formula is Ca3Al2Si3O12; manganese that gives it its characteristic brown color.

Hessonite garnets are a member of the grossular garnet family. They are reddish-brown and may have honey-colored inclusions. This stone has good luster and is slightly transparent.

Not only do garnets have many colours; they also have many names: almandine, andradite, demantoid, grossularite, hessonite, pyrope, rhodolite, tsavorite, spessartine, and uvarovite, to quote but a few.

Hessonite is the variety name for a fine orange, cinnamon brown, or pinkish variety of grossularite, while tsavorite is the trade name for fine dark green grossularite.

Important varieties include Hessonite (cinnamon-stone), a brownish yellow, orange yellow, or brownish orange color, and Tsavorite (or Tsavolite), a bright, vivid lime green color.

Each of these colors may be called by aseparate name such ashessonite which ranges in orange to brown colors. Nicknamed 'cinnamon stones' the earliest known source of hessonite garnets are from the 'spice island' of Sri Lanka.

Rhodolite is a purplish red, hessonite is the name for an orange, cinnamon, or pinkish variety. Tsavorite is the name given to dark green grossularite. Uvarovite and demantoid are also green varieties.

It also comes in a yellow-brown variety with the name "Hessonite" (from the Greek "esson", meaning inferior).

This stone is actually part of a family of gems with mineral and color differences that include rhodolite, malaya, demantoid, grossular, hessonite, spessartite, almandine, mandarin, and combinations of these varieties.
