It all started in 1866 on a farm near Hopetown, a young shepherd named Erasmus Jacobs found a small white pebble along the bank of the Orange River.
The initial name of Star of South Africa was given by the Lilienfield Brothers who were merchants in Hopetown and had bought the diamond for £11,200.
In 1866 a shepherd boy found a small, shiny stone on the south bank of the Orange River near Hopetown.
It was not until 1866 that diamonds were authenticated in South Africa, with the finding of the Eureka Diamond near Hopetown in Cape Province.
