The name hypersthene (HIGH-purse-theen) is of Greek origin: hyper (meaning "extreme" or "above") and sthenos ("strength").

Also interbedded with the gneiss are several large masses of a peculiar hornblende-like rock (kupfferite): this is in part a felted mass of fibrous lamellae, ...

It and the massive green variety that often houses ruby crystals and inclusions of dark hornblende are used for cabochons and carved ornamental objects.

The garnet is present as imperfectly developed crystals surrounded by a rim of coarsely crystalline hornblende. The crystals range from about 1 millimeter to almost 1 meter in diameter but average about 100 millimeters in diameter.

Granite: A common igneous rock composed of quartz, orthoclase, and hornblende, often accompanied by pyroxene or mica. It is called granite because of the granular surface. Granite is frequently used for buildings and monuments.

As lapis lazuli (Arabic/Latin blue stone) is composed of several minerals (if only in small quantities - augite, calcite, diopside, mica, hauynite, hornblende, pyrite) some experts consider it not to be a mineral, but a rock; ...

It is chalcedony that has dendritic (tree-like) inclusions of green (red or black) hornblende. The inclusions often form beautiful patterns. Moss agate has a hardness of 6.5-7 and a specific gravity of 2.6.

anyolite (n) is a metamorphic rock which is considered to be a form of zoisite as it contains zoisite minerals mixed with hornblende. Anyolite is usually green. Where there are inclusions of ruby, anyolite is known as ruby-in-zoisite.
