Topaz varietal names based on color are limited to one, Imperial Topaz, which connotes a vivid reddish-orange, but is also sometimes used (incorrectly) to denote a sherry-colored, orangish-brown.

Natural pink and red material is rare. Fine orange-yellow material (Imperial topaz) is relatively scarce. Abundant colorless or pale colored material is irradiated and heat-treated to produce blue material resembling aquamarine.

The most valuable type of topaz is Imperial topaz with a golden yellow to orange color. Although a very hard gemstone, topaz may be susceptible to breaking.

Citrine is a yellow quartz stone, sometimes mistaken for gold topaz. Citrine however, is much cheaper than real gold topaz (imperial topaz). Scottish topaz or Cairngorn could be defined as something between citrine and smokey quartz.
