Intaglios: A gem carved in negative relief.

Intaglios
This art conception is quite similar to that of cameos. It is carved on gemstones and seashells as well. The difference between the two is of carved portraits.

Intaglios and Cameos originated in ancient Greece where glyptography was perfected to an art form.

Cameos and intaglios are similar in that both usually are carved portraits in stone or seashells. They differ in that cameos are raised portraits, while intaglios are carved down into the surface of the material.

As a jewelry stone, it is either carved (intaglios), polished en cabochon, or fashioned into beads, bracelets or rings.
The quality of the jade is taken into account when fashioning.

" The ancient Greeks and Romans used onyx for cameos and intaglios, and in India, onyx was worn for protecting against the evil eye and also for cooling ardor (it was believed that onyx provoked discord and separated lovers).

Frequently Garnets were carved into cameos and intaglios and worn in rings. Carbuncle is an old term which typically referred to a Cabochon Garnet. The back of the Cab was hollowed out to create a brighter Garnet and make it more transparent.

hematite - An opaque mineral; yielding pigments when red and earthy; fashioned as intaglios and other carved gems when dark gray to black with metallic luster. The latter variety is translucent and red in very thin sections.

The stone has its use in intaglios and cameos. It is actually silicon dioxide with the specific gravity ranges in between 2.65 to 2.66. The hardness of this stone is seven on Mohs scale and the refractive index varies in between 1.543 to 1.552.

To create intricately carved cabochons, cameos, and intaglios (photo above) out of sapphire, early Roman engravers may have used 'adamas' (diamond) fragments as carving tools, given that they are the only material that is harder than corundum.

Some of the most common intaglios were carved in the gemstone Carnelian and used for signet rings. The earliest known signet rings date back to ancient Egypt.

Treasured by the Romans, opals were held in high esteem and worn by the wealthy in the form of rings and intaglios as a symbol of love, hope and purity. The Arabs believed that the opals fell from the sky during lightening storms.

The Victorians, too, prized chalcedony for carved cameos and intaglios: its fine texture allows for delicate and intricate workmanship.

A form of Quartz, the Romans prized them as seals, and the Victorians carved them into an endless array of cameos and intaglios. To this day, the elegant appeal of black Onyx makes it the choice of those who prefer basic black.

Onyx
Onyx is a chalcedony that consists of parallel bands of white and black. It is a semi-precious gemstone and is commonly used in cameos and intaglios.

It is opaque and generally dark grey (almost black) in colour. It is cut en cabochon or as beads, though in Germany it is also used for intaglios. It is similar to steel in appearance, but much darker.

Onyx is not always black, but black onyx is the most popular in jewelry. Onyx also exists in white, tan, and brown. It is usually cut in the shape of a cabochon and sometimes found in the form of beads. Also commonly used for intaglios and cameos.
