The other chalcedony family, jasper, has less-regular patterns and is less defined than the agates. Another difference between the two is that agates tend to be translucent (or at least contain translucent bands), while jaspers are generally opaque.
This has traditionally been achieved by lightly scratching the gold item on what is called a touchstone, which is a mildly abrasive, dark colored piece of jasper or quartz.
Jasper, in contrast to chalcedony, is an opaque and more coarsely grained cryptocrystalline quartz. Like chalcedony, it may be patterned or uniform in color.
Agates are often confused with jaspers, which have less-regular patterns and patterns that are less defined than agates. Agates also tend to be translucent (or at least contain translucent bands), while jaspers are usually opaque.
Jasper sometimes looks like a landscape painting. Another staple of the jewellery industry is black onyx, chalcedony quartz which owes its even black colour to an ancient dyeing process that is still used today.
