Lead (pronounced /ˈlɛd/) is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Pb (Latin: plumbum) and atomic number 82.

Lead: A soft, dense, metallic element. Lead is bluish in color, but tarnishes readily to a dull gray. It is both malleable and ductile and easily fuses with other metals to form alloys.

Lead crystal -A top-quality, colourless, transparent glass resembling natural or rock crystal. Made through an ancient process that involves lead oxide. To be crystal, there must be a minimum of 10% lead ...

Lead-free Pewter. Today newly manufactured pewter should be a lead free alloy usually being hardened with additions of antimony and copper, containing over 90% tin. Other elements such as silver and bismuth are sometimes used.

Lead Glass Treatments & Flux-Healing of Rubies
Surface cracks, cavities, or inclusions in ruby can be repaired using the "flux healing" (FH) method, also known as "glass in-filling.

Lead - A heavy (density 11.3) soft metal, with a dull blue-grey appearance. It has a low melting point, and for this reason it has been used in solders. Lead is a toxic substance. Its main use is in batteries; especially those used in vehicles.

Lead Glaze - It was the first really efficient glaze for clay pottery, known in the Near East nearly 4000 years ago.
Dusted - A finely powdered and sifted natural sulfide of lead which was applied to ceramic surfaces.

Full Lead Crystal: Full lead crystal is the finest man-made crystal, because its high lead oxide content serves to enhance its natural color spectrum.

Full-lead Crystal - glass with a lead content of 24% or higher.
Heavy Cut Crystal - crystal whose design is characterized by deep cuts or impressions.

Lead crystals that are faceted with a glass cutting machine and renowned for their sparkle. The process was invented by Swarovski in Austria.
Aventurine ...

Lead crystal: Colorless, transparent glass resembling rock crystal. Must be 10% lead to be considered crystal.
Lobster claw clasp: An interlocking catch with a spring mechanism and a safety lock.

Lead glass: A glass that contains a large proportion of lead oxide. The addition of this oxide raises the refractive index and makes it much more brilliant than ordinary glass. It was the most common glass imitation of diamond.

The lead phosphate mineral, pyromorphite, is probably the most common lead secondary species to be found at Leadhills and Wanlockhead, in addition to cerussite,
with which is is very commonly associated.

Among the minerals of the apatite group number the three lead ores pyromorphite (Pb5Cl(PO4)3), mimetite (Pb5Cl(AsO4)3), and vanadinite (Pb5Cl(VO4)3). Each of these species contains both lead and chlorine.

Its brilliant color was once thought to be caused by copper, but now is attributed to the presence of lead or possibly iron. Amazonite is an opaque stone, often found with white, yellow or gray inclusions and a silky luster or silvery sheen.

This is placed in a small crucible or cupel, with lead oxide, a carbon reducing agent and fluxes of silica sand, borax and fluorite, and melted in a muffle furnace. 3.

Unfortunately the addition of lead or other heavy metals (such as thallium) makes the product very soft and also very subject to attack by gases such as are always present in the atmosphere of cities.

Gems of one form or another occur worldwide wherever favorable geologic conditions lead to their formation.

Pewter is an alloy of low melting point metals including tin, lead, antimony, bismuth and sometimes a bit of silver or copper. U.S. manufacturer's are required by law to make lead free pewter.

uranium-thorium-lead dating A form of isotope dating that relies on the extremely long half-life of radioactive isotopes of uranium, which decay into isotopes of lead, to determine the age of rocks in which uranium and lead are present.

PASTE: A superior glass containing oxide of lead used for jewelry to imitate gems and gemstones. Much paste is actually a composition of pounded rock crystal melted with alkaline salts and colored with metallic oxides.

Base metals include copper, zinc, tin, and lead. BASSE-TAILLE Basse-taille (meaning "low cutting" in French) is an enameling technique in which the underlying metal (usually gold or silver) is carved in low relief (the metal's surface is cut away by ...

A knowledge of cleavage for the cutter is important as it can lead to an easy first step to the fashioning process for diamonds.

This is time-consuming and can be wasteful of material and if polishing is hurried and careless can lead to a loss of detail or crispness in the piece.

Impregnated with colorless or colored lead glass filler to improve appearance; sometimes classified as composite gemstones, these rubies are treated using heat and a high refractive index lead-glass to fill fractures and cavities.

Diamond is hard, Graphite is soft (the "lead" of a pencil). Diamond is an excellent electrical insulator, Graphite is a good conductor of electricity. Diamond is the ultimate abrasive, Graphite is a very good lubricant.

Its crystal accumulates atoms of uranium, which decay to lead at a known rate. By measuring the relative abundance of two types of uranium and lead in a zircon, geologists can determine old it is. Zircon is also incredibly durable.

Iron metal about 8, lead about 13, gold about 19, and osmium, the densest substance, and a native element mineral, is 22. Density may be measured by measuring the volume, usually by displacing water in a graduated cylinder, and the mass.

Different stones are often very inconsistent in their ease of polishing, particularly in the case of faceted stones, so gemcutters are often very inventive in trying new combinations of polishing agents and polishing surfaces -- often tin, tin-lead, ...
