Limestone: A common sedimentary rock consisting mostly of calcium carbonate that was deposited by the remains of marine animals. It is used as a building stone and in the manufacture of lime, carbon dioxide, and cement.

Limestone is a type os sedimentary rock. Limestone is a white to gray, fine-grained rock made of calcium carbonate. It fizzles when it comes in contact with vinegar or any other acid.

Limestone quarries can be good sites for fossils and, occasionally, for minerals too, and there are a number
of such sites in this region. Mineralisation caused by intrusive Tertiary dykes may also add extra interest.

This is a limestone matrix with andalusite crystals. It is also called Porphory. It received the name Chinese Writing Rock or Stone because of the crystalline structure resembling the Chinese characters of the written language.

The shale-limestone beds are gently to severely folded, in places contorted (Figs. 5 and 7). The folds are small, irregular in strike and pitch, non-persistent, and lie in all directions; in short, they indicate no general direction of compression.

Stunning vertical limestone cliffs jut into the sea several hundred feet above the water level - mute evidence of the extensive geological activity and plate tectonics that took place in the region more than 200 million years ago.

The mother rock on which ruby is found is a white dolomitic granular limestone or marble .The secondary gem-bearing bed consists of brown or yellow clayey or sandy material known as byon in Burmese.

Appearance
Onyx is the name given to chalcedony which is uniform in color, generally black or white. Onyx should not be confused with onyx marble, a banded stone which is a form of limestone (calcite or aragonite).

Malachite is found in many places including the Ural Mountains, Israel, Congo, and the U.S. It forms when copper minerals reacts with carbonated water or limestone. Malachite is only found in shades of green and has a very obvious and unique look.

Calcite: Calcium Carbonate is a mineral that is variable in color and form. It has a white streak and is brittle. It is translucent to transparent. It is found in abundance in limestone and marbles.

Dolomite
Usually gray, pink, or white mineral, essentially used as a construction and ceramic material, for a furnace refractory, and in fertilizer. A magnesia-rich sedimentary rock resembling limestone.

Lapis lazuli is mined under primitive conditions and in difficult terrain where it is present as an irregular occurrence in limestone. Russian deposits are at the southwest end of Lake Baikal.

Other imitations are blue dyed howlite, surface limestone and blue dyed, plastic treated marble beads and plastics.
