LUSTER BRILLIANCE
These frequently used terms to describe the visual appearance of the interaction between light and a gem are often confused and misused, sometimes even by experienced industry professionals.

Luster (Lustre)
A pearl's "luster" is one of its most important physical attributes, and the highest determining factor in grading and valuation after its regional origin.

Pearl Luster
When a mollusk senses an irritant within its body it secretes layers of semi-opaque calcium carbonate called nacre (NAY-ker) to coat the irritant. This substance builds up over time and becomes a pearl.

Brilliance and luster:
Diamond's true adamantine luster comes from its excellent transparency and high refractive index of 2.418. Its brilliance is penetrating to the extent that it triggers our senses to produce diverse feelings.

Luster:
The luster or brilliance of transparent gems is caused by light reflecting from the stone's surface. The smoother and more highly polished the surface is, the greater the luster will be.

Luster : In layman's words luster refers to the shine and gleam while technically it is the quality of the light reflections from the pearl's surface.

Luster
The luster of a gemstone is comprised of the quantity and quality of the light reflected from its surface. There is an inherent, potential luster possible for each species and variety of gemstone.

Luster
Luster is the amount of light a pearl reflects... both from its surface glow and its inner light, a deep mirror-like reflection. The better the nacre quality of the pearl, the more superior its luster.

Luster: The intensity of light reflected from the surface of the pearl. High luster pearls reflect light well and show mirror-like reflections. Low luster pearls appear milky or chalky.

Luster
Pearl luster refers to its light-reflecting ability, typically described as brilliance or glow. Good quality pearls shine brightly, and sharply reflect light.

Luster
A stone's luster is its glow or sheen, the result of the way it reflects light. Luster is dependent on both the stone's surface (polish) and the reflective index of the Mineral.

Luster
Luster is a measure of the glow and shininess of a pearl. It's the result of light being both refracted down through the layers of nacre at the same time it is reflecting back from them. High luster is desirable in a pearl.

Luster
Luster refers to the sparkle of a stone due to light reflecting off the gemstone.

Luster
Of all in cultured pearls, luster is perhaps the most important. Fine luster produces an almost mirror-like reflection on the surface of pearls, when looked at in normal light. You should avoid cultured pearls that look dull and chalky.

Luster - Influenced by transparency and thickness of the nacre, and the bead nucleus used. Pearls with nacre too thin or opaque tend to look chalky rather than iridescent. Nacre thickness of 0.5 mm or greater is needed for a good luster.
