Lustre
For cultured pearl experts, lustre is perhaps the most important indicator in evaluating cultured pearl quality. Lustre is what separates the inferior pearl from the superior and the ordinary from the extraordinary.

Lustre
Pearls produce an intense, deep shine called lustre. This effect is created when light reflects off the many layers of tiny calcium carbonate crystals that compose the pearl. This substance is called nacre.

Lustre - A combination of surface brilliance and a deep glow that seems to emanate from within the heart of a pearl.

Lustre is the most important factor in choosing pearls. The inner glow of the pearl combined with the surface brilliance defines lustre. The higher the lustre, the thicker the nacre or secretion from the oyster and the stronger the glow.

Lustre is one of the most important qualities of a pearl, referring to the reflection of light off the surface of a pearl and the refraction of light from its layers of nacre. It is sometimes referred to as the glow of the pearl.

This gem, with its discreet yet rather greasy lustre, which comes in many fine nuances of green, but also in shades of white, grey, black, yellow, and orange and in delicate violet tones, has been known to Man for some 7000 years.

A common type of moonstone, a whitish-bluish semi-translucent stone usually set as a cabochon.

A mineral that is reddish-brown to red, sometimes yellowish, and has a brilliant lustre. It is sometimes found as a needle-like inclusion in some gemstones, e.g. Sagenitic quartz and sagenite.
