Macle: An irregular-shaped diamond crystal, usually flattened and long. Many fancy cut diamonds like the marquise are cut from macles.
Marquise: A modified version of the round brilliant cut, navette (boat) shape with 58 facets.

Fancy cut (a, n) Macles and other oddly shaped crystals are cut in a fancy cut in order to minimize waste and follow the rough shape of the stone.

Diamonds are often found as twinned crystals (macles). These crystals are often very shallow and were subsequently relatively cheap due to their unfavorable form.
Some of the fancy shapes are better suited for retaining the maximum weight of the more flat forms of diamond rough called macles and flats, and many are also cut from the less perfectly shaped octahedral and dodecahedral crystals.
For manufacturing the Troidia cut only the triangular shallow pieces, so-called "macles" are used, which because of their distorted crystalline structure and frequent twinning are difficult to out.
Diamonds that go into polishing without going through the initial preparatory stages of cleaving and sawing. Usually includes macles and cleavages among other stones.
