This hydrous carbonate of copper occurring in nature as an opaque stone, varying in colour from very light to very dark green. It has characteristic banding and is fragile and easily scratched.

Malachite is a soft material that forms botryoidal, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses with a mammilary crystal habit. Individual crystals are rare but do occur as slender to acicular prisms.

Sources -- Malachite occurs in huge sizes and has been widely used for ornamental and architectural items. Zaire is a primary source.
