It is the saturated golden-sherry or quince-jelly hue with often a brown modifier and yellow or pink undertones that is named "imperial topaz".

Gray grading to black is the normal saturation modifier or mask found in chrome tourmaline. Due to its chemistry, chrome tourmaline is normally highly saturated. An overabundance of chromium/vanadium appears to be the culprit.

When such is the case, modifiers such as "laboratory grown", "synthetic", "cultured", or "man-made", must, by Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations, be used in the descriptions of any such pieces being advertised or marketed.

Gray in sapphire is a saturation modifier reducing color concentration and brightness of the stone. Gray masking in Kashmir sapphire is minimal making them appear comparatively dense and purer.
