In the case of Montana sapphires (Rock Creek, Missouri River), the Mg2+ is often present in greater concentrations in the core of the crystal. Thus heating in an oxidizing atmosphere causes a deep yellow core in many stones.

Color most commonly associated with the term "Montana Sapphire" is stone of medium to light tone, very transparent, with what has been described as a steely gray blue or somewhat metallic blue color.

George Frederick Kunz secured a steady supply of unusual gemstones for the firm's jewelry: Montana sapphires, Mexican turquoise and fire opals, tourmalines from New England, Russian demantoid garnets.

"Montana sapphires" are usually of greenish blue or pale electric blue. Such fine blue stones as are mined in Montana would be sold under another name according to the quality of their color, and not as "Montana sapphires.

More should be said about the effects of heat-treating techniques on Montana sapphires, and the variety of fancy colored sapphires available. Not all Montana sapphires are suitable for heat- treating because of variations in chemical composition.

The color of the Montana sapphires vary from pale blue, steel blue to a pale violet blue.Tiffany Jewelers was one of the first jewelers to use Montana Sapphires. The mixture of the blue hues is striking when used together in a mono chromatic design.
