Mounting
A mounting or "semi - mount" is a pre-made casting awaiting the stones to be selected for the final setting where there are normally preset side stones (usually pave diamonds or side stones).

Mounting Design:
Bypass shank - A ring design in which the two sides of the band do not meet in a straight line, but "bypass" one another.

Semi-Mounting/Semi-Mount - A setting, already embellished with diamonds, gem stones or engraving, that awaits a center diamond. A diamond that is most complimented by the design of the semi-mount is then secured in the head of the ring.

The most common gemstone used in wedding bands is diamond. Most wedding bands are actually diamond bands. Not always do they have diamonds alone, they might combine other precious gems with diamonds.

Semi-Mount/Semi-Mounting: A finished piece of jewelry already embellished with gemstones and/or engraving that is simply waiting for the center stone. Pieces are sold this way to allow the buyer to add a center stone of their own choosing.

When setting colored stones, it is extremely important to place the stone in the mounting in exactly the same position each time you test fit the stone while cutting the seat. This is due to the fact that most colored stones are cut irregularly.

Emerald has a relatively high hardness of 7 1/2 to 8; but because of the inclusions it should usually be treated as a fragile stone and set into o a protective mounting.

All opal is relatively soft and should be in a protective mounting if set in a ring. Opal rings should not be worn in situations involving heavy household or outdoor work where the opal may be hit or scratched.

The girdle should be thick enough to prevent chipping during mounting and wear and no thicker, and should be of uniform thickness around the stone. A guideline for maximum girdle thickness is 3% of the stones diameter.

You should remember that each stone has been weighed individually and respective of their various grades- before mounting. Never buy a ring that has several stones in it with information only about its total weight.

As a result of most jewelry being manufactured, settings and mountings are designed to accommodate gemstones within specific tolerances. Gemstones that are cut to these specifications are called calibrated stones.

Moonstones are therefore better suited to the less rude service in brooch mountings, etc., than to that of ring stones. However, being comparatively inexpensive, many moonstones, especially of the choicer bluish type, are set in ring mountings.

Mounted Stones Stay in the Mounting
Some labs (we know at least one) can laser inscribe your mounted diamond in the ring without taking it out of the setting.

Pavé is a term that refers to a jewelry mounting technique which involves setting small diamonds or other stones very close together so that no metal can be seen between them. Many pieces of jewelry are entirely pavé, and the effect is dazzling.

When "natural" transparent gems are sold in closed mountings so that the crown is the only visible part, your "fake detector" should be on alert.

channel setting - A type of stone setting often used in mounting a number of small stones of uniform size in a row as in a diamond wedding ring.

Another factor that affects a diamonds's apparent color is the color of the mounting itself. Yellow gold makes slight amounts of yellow in a diamond less obvious, while white metal mountings make the color in yellow diamonds more apparent.

All opal is relatively soft and should be in a protective mounting if set in a ring. Be especially careful with the points of marquise and pear shapes. Clean with mild dish soap: use a toothbrush to scrub behind the stone where dust can collect.

I'm frequently asked to repolish scratched or abraded stones in the mounting. Depending on the jewelry and the work required, I can sometimes oblige. Here's a nice emerald cabochon I repolished for Rainey in the diamond and white gold ring setting.
