ORIENT - The soft iridescent glow on or just below the surface of a pearl or cultured pearl. It is caused by the interference and diffraction of light from the minute crystals comprising the pearl's nacre.

ORIENTAL. A term much used in the gem trade to dis­tinguish stones of entirely differing chemical and crystallographic nature to which a common name is applied, as "Oriental topaz," bestowed on specimens of yellow corundum of gem quality.

Oriental Opal - Hungary was the source of nearly all of the best opal supplied to Europe in early times. It was usually sent from the mines near Czerwenitza to Constantinople and forwarded to various European cities.

The layers of nacre that form a pearl contain tiny light-reflecting crystals. When there are enough layers of crystals and they align in a certain way, the reflected light will form a prismatic effect on the surface of the pearl.

The Oriental circlet was also designed by Albert and set with opals which were Prince Albert's favorite stone. It was later altered by Queen Alexandra and reset with rubies that were presented to Victoria in 1876.

In the Orient, cat's eye is highly revered as a preserver of good fortune, the belief being that it guards the owner's wealth and it protects him from poverty. In Sri Lanka cat's eye was considered to be a potent charm against evil spirits.

Note the orientation of the 4 axes and their + and - ends. If viewed vertically (down the c axis), the axes divide a circle into 6 equal parts and the axial notation reads (starting with a +) as +,-,+,-,+,-. The positive and negative ends alternating.

The great Oriental traveler, Sir Richard Francis Burton, had a large star sapphire which he referred to as his "talisman" .Just the mere sight of the stone was believed to bring luck and he showed it to people everywhere he went.

Luster and orient. Luster is the sharpness and intensity of reflections on the pearl's surface, and orient is the iridescent colors one sees within the pearl. The higher the luster and orient, the more valuable the pearl.

Light reflecting from these overlapping layers produces a characteristic iridescent luster, also known as the "orient of pearl." An irritant is introduced to initiate the formation of a cultured pearl.

Pearls formed by saltwater oysters are commonly known as oriental pearls and those produced by freshwater mollusks are called freshwater pearls. Our pearl stock is freshwater only, and like most other freshwater pearls, is cultured in China.

The higher the luster, or "orient", the more valuable the specimen. The larger the pearl, the greater the value.

Advantage has been taken of the colouring matter thus afforded to imitate artificially the Oriental pearl.

Powder diffraction (XRD) is a technique use to characterize the crystallographic structure, crystallite size (grain size), and preferred orientation in polycrystalline or powdered solid samples.

The material in a streak sample thus consists of a powder composed of randomly oriented microscopic crystals rather than a lattice structure containing the uniformly oriented unit cells which compose a macroscopic crystal.

The only gems which are ascertained to be minerals of Siam, are the sapphire, the Oriental ruby, and the Oriental topaz [yellow sapphire].

Orient is the depth, iridescence and translucence of the nacre layering. Luster is the glow or shine created when light travels through the nacre of the Pearl and is different than the light reflected off the surface of a Pearl.

The word comes from the Greek karation, the Italian carato and the Arabic qirat, all meaning 'fruit of the carob tree', as the carob seed was formerly used to balance the scales in Oriental bazaars.

The finest pearls (called oriental pearl) are produced by the pearl oyster.

Throughout Asian history, jade has been the most respected and revered stone in the Orient.
When linked to a culture, there is no doubt that jade is the stone which belongs with China, where it has been considered sacred.

The modern scientific explanation is not nearly as romantic, but still quite fascinating: A natural pearl (often called an Oriental pearl) forms when an irritant works its way into a particular species of oyster, mussel or clam.

Usage: It can be used as a scanning device for those of us who are not visually orientated, to get an overall view of a person's light system to see the thought forms in their energy body.

Pearl Essence - Also called essence d'orient. A crystalline substance extracted from fish scales and combined with acrylic resins. Used to make imitation pearls.

Thus in a given orientation, two refractive indices, one associated with each polarized ray, is detected and the specimen is termed doubly refractive.
