Overlay Technique: A decorative technique involve two flat pieces of silver, or other metal. The top piece has a design cut out of it and is highly polished.

Overlay: Generic term used to describe any variety of costume jewelry that involves a base metal.
Oxidation: The breakdown of a metal over time as a result of exposure to oxygen and other natural elements.

Overlay is a type of jewelry decorative technique that involves two flat metal pieces.

Overlay - There are two techniques of physically joining two materials together: one is inlay and the other is overlay (or encrustation).

Overlay
A decorative technique which involves two separate pieces of metal. Each piece, which is usually hammered flat, receives different treatments to produce the look.

Hopi Overlay: Jewelry made by Hopi Indians that employs a method of creating jewelry called the Overlay technique. See Overlay technique.

Overlay: Decorative layer.
Oxidizing: Darkening the surface of metal by chemical or heat application.
Precious stones: Rare and costly gems, including diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires.

Overlay Vermeil - Gold applied over a silver base.
Platinum - A very heavy, durable metal that is usually 90% to 95% pure, alloyed with 5% to 10% of another precious metal. It is known for it's distinctive cool, white color.

GOLD OVERLAY Has the same meaning as "gold filled".
GOLD PLATED A thin layer of electroplated gold on base metal. All gold plated items are not plated with fine gold, some are only plated gold in color. A marking of 14K H.G.E. or 18K H.G.E.

The layer must be at least 10K gold and 5% of the total weight of the item. Gold Overlay and Rolled Gold Plate is the same as GF, except only 2.5% of the item must be gold. Viridian Gold does not sell gold filled products.

Gold filled jewellery is a solid layer of gold bonded with heat and pressure to a base metal such as brass. Gold filled jewellery is a great cost effective alternative to solid gold jewellery.

Gold Filled, also called Gold Overlay, refers to a layer of at least 10-karat gold that has been permanently bonded by heat and pressure to one or more surfaces of the support metal, then rolled or drawn to a prescribed thickness.

Gold filled: Also known as gold overlay. This term refers to a gold layer that has been bonded to a support metal. To qualify for use of this term, the gold must be at least 10% of the total weight.
