These cupriferous tourmalines from the Mina da Batalha in the Federal Brazilian State of Paraiba are small, rare and precious.

Paraiba Tourmalines - It is a stone blue to bluish green in colour. Minute quantity of copper and a tad of gold are responsible for the colour. In the year 1987, it was first mined in Paraiba State of Brazil and so named accordingly.

The Paraiba Tourmaline is the most prized variety of the stone. Its exquisite blue-green colour is not found in any other natural gemstone, and has made it highly sought-after amongst collectors and jewellers all over the world.

The color is close to that seen in the best Paraiba tourmaline, and is very attractive, but of course at a price which is only a tiny fraction of that of Paraiba Tourmaline.

A lawsuit was filed by the present owner of Mina da Batlha against a group of world class gemological laboratories over the definition of Paraiba tourmaline.

Apatite has appeared on the gem markets of the world as a very affordable substitute for Paraiba tourmaline. Canada is the source for the intense sea-blue and green stones can be easily mistaken for the much more expensive tourmalines.

In the marketplace, Burma ruby, Kashmir sapphire, and Paraiba tourmaline will command premium prices simply because they hail from the specific areas named. This is not a scam but it is a snare! The aficionado is interested in a beautiful gem.

The most expensive varieties are the green chrome varieties from Tanzania, and the amazing bluish Brazilian stones know as Paraiba tourmalines. Chrome tourmalines rival emeralds in color, and cost almost as much.

Gems like orange-pink Padparadscha sapphire or blue green Paraiba tourmaline or bi-color alexandrite are celebrated for their exquisite colors.

This new type of tourmaline, which soon became known as Paraiba tourmaline, came in incredibly vivid blues and greens, due to copper sulfate added to a tiny amount of gold as coloring agent.

Indicolite is a dark blueish black stone. The Paraiba tourmaline is a bright neon-blue and Rubellite is a deep reddish purple stone. Schorl is the name given to black tourmalines which are the most commonly found tourmalines.

Elemental copper is an important factor in determining the stones color and is unique to Paraiba tourmaline. In addition, the occurrence of manganese can cause violet to red colors. These exciting colors are not revealed until the specimens are cut.

Paraiba Tourmaline, for example, found in the late 1980's in Brazil, mined out by mid 1990's can now cost as much as US$20,000 per carat.
