Pearlescent
A word that describes the appearance of a gemstone or a finish e.g. a knife handle that reflects light in a pearl-like way, but which is not necessarily a pearl.

The lady seated at the table in the centre of the image is descaling fish so that the scales can be dissolved to produce a pearlescent liquor.

Mother-of-pearl: The pearlescent material on the inside of mollusk shells like abalone, oysters, and mussels. This material can be scraped off, sliced thin, and used as inlay on a variety of jewelry, furniture, etc.

Iridescent
A display of lustrous rainbow-like colors. The colors seen in an oil slick or mother of pearl are good examples of iridescence. Synonymous with "Pearlescent".

Prehnite is known in China as Putao Yu, or "Grape Jade" due to its nodular crystal habit which can appear like a bunch of pale-green grapes. Prehnite exhibits pseudochromatic coloration which give it a distinct pearlescent (mother-of-pearl) effect.

Does the pearly surface look richly pearlescent, or does it have a "thin" look to it? A thick pearl coating is always preferred, and valued. Take the pearls and hold them up with the light behind them.
