The Pinctada Margaritifera "Black-Lipped" Oyster
Tahitian Pearls are found in a mollusk that is native to the islands of French Polynesia. This bivalve mollusk is called the "black-lipped" oyster, or Pinctada Margaritifera cumingi.

Refers to any surface defect on a pearl. Blemishes may include cracks, chips, dull spots, wrinkles, spots, holes, bumps, and pits.

Pinctada fucata or Pinctada martens (commonly called Akoya Pearl Oyster): Akoya cultured pearls-producing saltwater mollusks grown in the cooler waters of Japan or China.

Pinctada Fucata Martensii oysters produce pearls which are round, lustrous and beautiful. It takes about two years for the pearl to grow. If left for a longer period the quality and size gets better. Colors are varied.

South Sea pearls are cultured in the Pinctada maxima oyster, a mollusk found in an area stretching from Australia to southern China. Spinel:A mineral that naturally occurs in all colors.

They are produced by the large, black-lipped pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera (also called the Tahitian black pearl oyster), a mollusk found in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean.

The Giant Silver Lipped and Gold Lipped PINCTADA MAXIMA oysters of the South Seas, produce most of the worlds large natural Pearls. A Pearl is formed when a piece of sand or other foreign substance enters into the living membrane of an oyster.

These pearls are produced by the silver-lipped or gold-lipped variety of the Pinctada Maxima oyster.

Tahitian legend says that Te Ufi (pinctada margaritifera) was given to man by Oro, the god of peace and fertility, who came to earth on a rainbow and offered the pearl to the beautiful princess Bora Bora as a sign of eternal love.

With one exception, the various oysters which produce all types of SWCP are species belonging to the genus Pinctada. For example: Pinctada imbricata, P. margarifera, and P. maxima.

Above all in French Polynesia, Tahitian pearls have been cultivated since the 1960s inside the black-lipped pearl-bearing bivalve Pinctada margaritifera.
