Rhyolite (-017)
aka Leopardskin Jasper, Rainforest Jasper
Though at first glance it might look like jasper, rhyolite is an igneous rock with high silica content - chemically identical to granite.

rhyolite
Rhyolite is a a type of volcanic lava or rock that is usually light in color; it contains 69 percent silica and is high in potassium and sodium.

Comments: a cross between almandite & pyrope Rhyolite ... a volcanic rock
Colors: shades of gray, yellow, pale to deep red
Luster: glassy
Hardness: 6 - 6.5
Specific gravity: v.
Occurrence: volcanic
Crystal or stone size: massive ...

Rhyolite (Astrological Sing of Sagittarius) Rhyolite crystallizes in the form of fine-grained felsite, consisting mainly of alkaline feldspars and quartz. The color ranges include all colors except for dark gray, dark green, and black.

The discovery of red beryl crystals (bixbite) in volcanic rhyolite in the Wah Wah Mountains of Utah created a stir in mineralogical circles during the late 1970s.

acid igneous rocks containing a high silica content, greater than 63% SiO2 (examples rhyolite and dacite)
intermediate igneous rocks containing between 52 - 63% SiO2 (example andesite) ...

Topaz crystals are found in cavities in rocks such as granite or rhyolite. Topaz is composed of silicate of aluminum containing fluorine and hydroxyl. Gem quality topaz is mostly found in pegmatite dykes.

Found in white volcanic rhyolite; its color is contributed by cesium and manganese. Fewer than 10,000 stones are cut per year with more 95% of those being melee, mostly in lower grades.

This variety of beryl is associated with a white volcanic rhyolite. The combination of red and white makes for some spectacular mineral specimens. To illustrate the rarity of fine quality specimens, it was reported that the Utah deposit yielded 0.

The opals are found in rhyolite geodes (thundereggs) in a perlite that has altered to a pastel colored clay.

Llanite is a hypabyssally intruded Rhyolite with phenocrysts of microcline and euhedral Quartz. The Quartz crystals are blue hexagonal bipyramids. The unusual blue coloration of the Quartz is thought to be due to Ilmenite inclusions.

There are the various geological conditions in which beryl is found and this includes conditions like metamorphic schist, greisens and volcanic rhyolites which are hydro thermally formed.

Topaz stones which have rhyolites are generally rich with bixbite. Some of the minerals with which bixbite is found are Bixbyite, Quartz, Orthoclase, Topaz, Hematite, and Pseudobrookite.

Silicic igneous rocks (SIR) include granites, granodiorites, and rhyolites, and abundant minerals include quartz, muscovite, and alkali feldspars. These are commonly light-colored although color is not always diagnostic.

Rainforest Jasper A type of jasper that is characterized by its beautiful green pattern. It is also sometimes called Rhyolite. Rainforest jasper helps with communication and listening, and also helps to cleanse the liver.

Associations:
Produced by weathering or hydrothermal alteration of iron-bearing minerals. May be found in some syenite, trachyte, granite and rhyolite.
Industrial / ecomonic uses:
Important ore or iron, sometimes used as a gemstone.

The markings in turquoise, called the matrix, are created by deposits of iron pyrite (black), iron oxide (gold) and rhyolite (yellow-brown).

Composed predominantly of basalt, several other volcanic rocks including trachyte and rhyolite are not uncommon.

Pure topaz is a transparent silicate or "nesosilicate" mineral created from a combination of aluminium and fluorine, and is typically found in association with acidic rocks such as granite or rhyolite.

Topazus means to seek;Topaz is transparent and translucent, with a vitreous luster, and high specific gravity.Topaz occurs in cavities within granite or rhyolite igneous rock, pegmatite dikes, high temperature quartz veins, and/or alluvial deposits ...

Opal is found in rhyolite geodes (thundereggs). Of these geodes only about 10% of the total geodes contain opal and of those only 1% contain gem-quality opal with play-of-color. The other geodes contain agate, quartz crystals, or common opal.

rhyolite Any of a group of felsic igneous rocks that are the extrusive equivalents of granite.
