Freshwater mollusks can produce significantly larger quantities of nucleated pearls (up to 50) than their saltwater counterparts, making them an ideal choice from a production standpoint.

In the 20th century, little was known about the Chinese pearl industry until around 1970 when producers flooded the market with what were known as "rice pearls.

Rice or Seed Pearls: Tiny pearls resembling puffed rice, these look wonderful as multi-strand necklaces with dramatic pendants. The rice pearls are uneven in shape but after being strung together in strands they look spectacular.
