I really had no thought of writing an essay about what I considered the least interesting of the crystalline quartz varieties: rock crystal.

For the manufacture of spheres, the pieces of rock crystal used should be flawless, but some people do prefer pieces with inclusions for their «natural» look.

Rock Crystal
Rock Crystal is the clear colourless (white) form of the mineral quartz. As such it is related to amethyst which is the purple form of quartz, and also to citrine which is the yellow variety.

Fold rock is created when differential force is applied to a material, causing it to change its form [3]. Lower quantities of pressure will cause a material to 'fail' by fracturing, while higher stress levels will cause it to flow (ductile behavior).

Rock Crystal, Rose Quartz, and Smokey Quartz are sometimes cut as cabochons or hearts, and may also be tumbled for use in bracelets, necklaces, and costume jewellery. Rock Crystal is also commonly cut into large spheres and carvings.

Rock crystal
The transparent, colourless variety of quartz is still known as rock crystal. Long ago, people believed that rock crystal was a compact form of ice: in fact 'crystallos' means 'ice'.

Igneous rock - Rocks formed from magma that has cooled and solidified either at the Earth's surface (eg basalt) or deep below the Earth's surface (eg granite).

Clastic rock... Sedimentary rock made up of fragments of preexisting rocks and transported into the place of deposition.
Cleavage...The tendency of stones to split along one or more definite directions, always parallel to a possible crystal face.

A hollow rock cavity usually containing some form of one or more gemstones. Amethyst and Peridot are examples of gemstones found in geodes.
Girdle
The widest point in circumference of a gem.

Magma: Rock that forms below the surface of the Earth as a result of volcanic activity.
Mineral: An inorganic element of the Earth of consistent atomic structure and chemical composition.

Geode
A rock which contains a cavity lined with quartz or other gemstone crystals.
Girasol
A gemstone with a glowing, milky sheen that moves as the stone is moved in the path of a light source. Opalescence.

A geode is a rock whose crystal-filled interior can be hollow or filled. The crystals that form within the mineral crust of the geode is called druze. From the outside, geodes look like rounded, but otherwise ordinary rocks.
