The round cut is perhaps the most popular diamond cut used in pieces of fine jewelry. The round cut was designed to enhance a diamond's sparkle by maximizing the amount of light reflecting off of the diamond's top, or crown.

Round Cut is a fancy cut diamond that is round in shape.

Round cut diamonds with a depth of 59-62.5% and table of 53-59% is best to buy.
Symmetry is probably more important with round diamonds than with fancy shapes so we suggest at least Very Good for symmetry and Good rating for polish if possible.

Round Cut
Round brilliant cut gemstones are known to have the most vibrancy and sparkle. With 57 or 58 facets radiating from the center out to the girdle, a brilliant cut maximizes the amount of light that is reflected from the core of the gemstone.

The modern round cut brilliant stone has 58 facets, or 57 if the tiny bottom facet, the culet, is omitted. The Princess cut is unique in that it's a square diamond with pointed corners.

And while the round cut continues to be popular, it is becoming more common to see the oval cut, as well as the emerald.

OLD EUROPEAN CUT A round cutting style, the forerunner of the modern Brilliant Cut. An Old European cut, round gemstone is rounder in outline than an Old Mine Cut, but a large culet, small table and high crown distinguish this cut from a modern cut.

But because of the Florentine's unusual shape, anything other than a round cut would create a truly drastic loss of valuable diamond weight. Gem Slueth researched and found that there are only four light-yellow diamonds that weigh over 70 carats.

Round variations of these cuts eventually evolved, and are have names such as old European cut, English round cut, or Victorian cut.

Not only are round diamonds more durable than other shapes (due to the smooth edges) but, also, round cuts never go out of style, insuring a timeless, subtle statement that can be worn with any outfit and any mood.

With the 19th century came the rounded cuts like the old European cut (OEC, below) and the English round cut (not shown), both of which also have a total of 58 facets of the same type as today's round brilliants.

Thus, the princess cut enjoys the brilliant aspects of a round cut and also has a rectangular or square shape unlike the round cut diamonds. Hence, this cat is also known as "square modified brilliance".

The cut - tiny planes cut on the stone's surface - defines the sparkle and the shape which can be a round cut, the emerald, the pear, the marquise, the princess, the oval and the heart shape. Ask to see pictures of all these shapes.

Fancy Cut - Gem cut in any shape other than the standard round cut.
Figaro Chain - A chain with alternating long and round links that is similar in style to the curb link chain.

Fancy Cut Sometimes used to refer to a gemstone cut in any shape other than the standard round cut, but also used to refer to gemstones that are cut in a shape other than the well known shapes of round, oval, pear, trillion, marquise, etc.

Bezel setting gemstones cut with sides and angles is considered difficult, while oval and round cuts are easier.
