Sanding is similar to grinding but uses finer abrasives. Its purpose is to remove deep scratches left by coarser abrasives during grinding.

In this stage the stone gets the flat and smooth surface. Through the use of excellent abrasives, the graze and scratches are removed from the stones that are left behind in the previous step.

Sanding
Sanding is a process that is very much similar to grinding process but uses sharper tools. The purpose of sanding is to remove deep scratches left behind from sawing and grinding processes.

Sanding was originally done with (surprise!) sand, that is, fine-grained quartz. Quartz sand is hard enough for woodworking (Mohs hardness 7) but not very tough or sharp.

Sanding: The process after filing, in which the file marks are removed from the piece.

When sanding the surface of a piece of furniture, use a fine flour paper. Try using sheets that have already been used, as they will be gentler on the surface. Run your fingers over the surface first, to get the feel of any rough spots.

Deburring the rough cut metal edge is accomplished using a half-round hand file. A silicon carbide stone wheel or sanding drum is used to rough finish the backing to a smoothe, flat surface.

An Abrasion is where the perfect, clean, knife-edges of the Culet Facets are worn away or rounded off. Sort of like sanding the bottom with sandpaper. It may even feel rough or bumpy.
