The name "sard" is derived from one of the places that the stone was found, near the ancient Roman city Sardius (below, right), in the kingdom of Lydia, now in the Manisa province of of modern day Turkey.

Sard
A semi-precious stone related to carnelian. This brownish-red, opaque gemstone was once used extensively for seals and was carved using intaglio. Sard was named for Sardis, the ancient capital of Lydia.

Sard: This gemstone is brownish to brownish-red in colour. It is transparent to translucent.

Sard is a semi-precious stone brown to brownish-red, transparent to translucent variety of Chalcedony (Agate). When it grades into brown it is known as Carnelian.

Sard is a semi-translucent brown chalcedony variety. It was used by the ancients for magnificent carved amulets and signets. Otherwise by itself it's a bit dull.

Overview: Sard is a brownish mineral, and when it forms together with the straight white bands of onyx, the resulting stone is called Sardonyx. Sardonyx is a banded variety of chalcedony which is cryptocrystalline quartz.

Carnelian is often confused with Sard, a harder and darker mineral that is also a chalcedony quartz. Carnelian has historically been used to carve cameos, has been found in Egyptian tombs, and is said to be one of the stones in Aaron's breastplate.

The chalcedony family as a whole includes agate, jasper, carnelian, chrysoprase, onyx, bloodstone, aventurine, flint, chert and sard.

Sard is a darkish brown chalcedony similar to carnelian but of less intense color.
Sardonyx is an agate with alternating straight, parallel bands of reddish brown and, usually, white.

Other varieties of onyx include Sard onyx (brown base) and cornelian onyx (red base)
Black Onyx is different! Black Onyx does not have a mixture of layered colors. It is a term used to describe a one-colored chalcedony and is always dyed.

Carnelian and Sard: are solid colored, but translucent chalcedony that are in the red to brown end of the spectrum
Aventurine : A greenish quartz with fuchite mica or other metallic looking inclusions that make the material "sparkle".

Varieties include chrysoprase, cornelian (carnelian, sard, sardonyx, onyx, plasma, bloodstone, myrickite. There are many differently named varieties of agate depending on their appearance such as moss agate, fossilised wood.

Other forms of chalcedony are Onyx, Sard, Sardonxy, petrified dinosaur bone, chert, Flint, Fire Agate and Dendritic Agate. Because it is a porous stone, it can be stained or dyed to enhance or change the natural color of the stone.

Chalcedony includes carnelian, sard, plasma, prase, bloodstone, onyx, sardonyx, chrysoprase, thundereggs, agate, flint, chert, jasper, petrified wood, and petrified dinosaur bone just to name a few of the better known varieties.

Carnelian of a dark or brown shade, is called Sard. Sard was thought to provide protection against incantations and sorcery, and was believed to sharpen the wits, rendering the wearer fearless, victorious in his endeavors and happy.

Intaglio's had long functioned as seals and were usually made of carnelian and sard. Cameo's were introduced during this era.

For example clear red colored Chalcedony is known as 'carnelian' and or 'sard'. Green Chalcedony is called 'chrysoprase' which is colored by nickel oxide. 'Onyx' is a black and white stripped Chalcedony stone.

For example, large quantities of somewhat porous chalcedony from Brazil are stained and sold in imitation of natural agate or sard or other stones.

The term chalcedony denotes a grayish or milky-colored quartz including the family of onyx, agate, sard, cat's eye, jasper, carnelian, and chrysoprase.

Chalcedony includes agate, carnelian (waxy red), chalcedony (blue), chrysoprase (green), onyx (black and white), bloodstone, sard (brownish-red), jasper (hornstone), seftonite, and others. Chalcedony is porous and translucent.

The name Carnelian (sometimes called Cornelian) comes from the Latin word ‘carnis’ meaning flesh and applies to any agate that is red to reddish-brown or flesh-colored. It is a close relative of sard, differing only in the shade of red.

Apart from being a variety within the group, chalcedony is also a catchall term to describe cryptocrystalline quartz and includes many gems that have been coveted since antiquity such as agate, carnelian, sard, chrysoprase, bloodstone and jasper.
