Scapolite - The Rare Yellow Gem
SCAPOLITE - An African Gem
An African gem that comes in yellow and purple shades. It is rarely seen in commercial jewelry stores in either of the two common colors.

Scapolite is commonly a mineral of metamorphic origin. It is grayish white which occurs in tetragonal crystals and in cleavable masses. For such color, it is sometimes also called Wernerite.

Scapolite
Chemical composition -- A sodium or calcium aluminum silicate.
Color -- Colorless, yellow, purple, pink.

SCAPOLITE
Overview: Scapolite, which is Greek for "shaft", is commonly found in stubby to long prismatic crystals, hence the name.

Enhancements
Scapolite is not enhanced, however violet scapolite is produced by heat treatment.

Scapolite
You won't find scapolite without looking, but there are some beautiful yellow, violet and pink ones out there for the avid gem hunter. It does come in a few more colors and in cat's-eye form but these are really hard to find.

Mark found a great selection of purple scapolites from Tajikistan that were excellent single crystals, but will probably be sacrificed to the cutting wheel due to the increased sums gem collectors will pay.

Lapis Nevada is a pink and green gemstone, and is composed of no fewer than 11 minerals: thulite, scapolite, sericite, diopside and epidote, with minor amounts of feldspar, quartz, zoisite, clinozoisite, actinolite and apatite.
