Single large crystals of gypsum, typified by hardness and transparency.

Gypsum, var. Selenite is common at Philips Mine as micro crystal coatings in cavities and on other minerals. It is likely that these crystals formed since mining began as it is visible in the tunnels and on heavily decayed minerals on the dump.

Comments: Gypsum, a hydrated calcium SULFATE MINERAL, is used as a raw material in plaster of Paris, as fertilizer, as an ornamental stone (alabaster and satin spar), and as optical material (selenite).

It can be confused with selenite gypsum, but while selenite is very soft and can be scratched with a fingernail, moonstone is relatively hard.

Gypsum occurs in nature as flattened and often twinned crystals and transparent cleavable masses called selenite. It may also occur silky and fibrous, in which case it is commonly called satin spar. Finally it may also be granular or quite compact.

The name "moonstone" (pierre de lune French, mondstein German, piedra de luna Spanish or Italian) is derived from the Greek name Selenite or "goddess of the moon.

5d is a common form for selenite (gypsum). Many common minerals crystallize in this symmetry class, including azurite, clinopyroxene and clinoamphibole groups, datolite, epidote, gypsum, malachite, orthoclase, realgar, titanite, spodumene, and talc.
