A semi-transparent iridescent gemstone composed of silicon and water which are highly valued because their rainbow like hues display a show of colour within the stone. They diffract light at various wavelengths, creating multiple colours.

Opal A semi-transparent irridescent stone composed of silicon and water. Said to enhance natural abilities, stimulate creativity, and inspire realization of inner potential.

Jadeite can be semi-transparent to opaque and covers the spectrum from colorless through white, green, yellow, brown, red, orange, violet, to grey and black in color.

Although nephrite jade is China's original "Stone of Heaven," fine jadeite, as in this matched pair of semi-transparent bangles (53.4 mm in interior diameter, 9.8 mm thick), is the most sought-after of jades in the Chinese community today.

In the finest qualities, the gems will be semi-transparent and they will exhibit a sharp white eye. As you turn the stone around the eye will move.

As a marketing term in the gemstone industry, "chalcedony" refers more specifically to semi-transparent or translucent chalcedony with a solid color (commonly pale bluish-gray) and nearly wax like luster.

The Crystal structure comprises of hexagonal, trigonal and isometric lattice that transparent or semi-transparent in nature. The hardness of the stone is 9.25 with a Specific Gravity that ranges between 3.1 - 3.2.

CHALCEDONY PATCHES. Milk-like semi-transparent patches which sometimes occur as faults in rubies.
CHANGE OF COLOURS. Manifested in minerals like Labrado­rite, where the colours change as the stone is turned.

Black Diamond - When a diamond is dark gray, a very dark green or truly black, it is referred to in the trade as a black diamond. Such a stone may be opaque to nearly semi-transparent. Most black diamonds have been treated.

A pearlescent look generally has an illusory depth to it, seemingly of different layers of semi-transparent white and off-white coatings. The appearance of Mother of Pearl is also described as pearlescent.
