SEMIPRECIOUS GEMS
In addition to precious gems such as diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and rubies, there are several other gems that can greatly enhance any piece of jewellery.

Semiprecious stone: "Any gemstones other than a precious stone, or any gemstone of lower commercial value than a precious stone; specifically, a mineral that is less than 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Semiprecious Gemstone
Any stone that is not classified as precious (Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald and precious Opal are the precious gemstones).

Semiprecious: Any gemstones valued for their beauty but which are not one of the four "precious stones", (emerald, diamond, ruby or sapphire).

Semiprecious gem: At one time, this category was reserved for all gems other than diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. Like the category of precious gems, this term is seldom used today.

Jade is a semiprecious stone, which is often used to describe jadeite and nephrite both as these two are similar in appearance and use. It is available in varieties of shades like green, light purple, yellow, pink, creamy white etc.

Aquamarine is a semiprecious gemstone, named so for its light to medium seawater blue color. Its color actually ranges from light blue to blue-green. It is a kind of beryl (a mineral) which is famous beryl called emerald.

Tiger's Eye: A semiprecious variety of quartz found in South Africa. It may be yellowish-brown, bluish, or red in color with bands of darker and lighter shades across its surface.

Jade: An opaque semiprecious gemstone which is usually found in shades of green, but can be also be found in lavender and rose shades.

Probably one of the most recognized semiprecious gemstones in existence, turquoise has been popular since prehistoric times. This stone is a hydrated aluminum copper phosphate that often contains iron.

Now, when it comes to semiprecious stones, America is not so poor a country as one might imagine.

Years ago, the world generally referred to two types of gemstones -- precious and semiprecious. Diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires (and sometimes opals and pearls) were considered precious, and all other stones, semiprecious.

Or put more simply it is a striped, semiprecious variety of agate, with white, black, brown or red alternating bands. It is different from regular agate only because the bands of which it is composed are parallel and regular.
