Silver-gilt or gilded/gilt silver is silver coated with a fine gold layer. The gilding of the silver greatly reduces the need for cleaning or polishing the metal.

SILVER GILT (see VERMEIL): Process of applying a thin coat of gold or yellow lacquer over silver, to produce a rich golden color.

' It is also known as onlay, double or silver gilt. It is typically a combination of sterling silver and gold. To be considered vermeil, the gold must also be at least 10 karat and 1.5 micrometers (or greater) in thickness.

During the 19th century, jewel boxes were increasingly made in other materials, including pewter, silver, tin, earthenware, silver gilt, and papier mache. Wood, though, remained the most important base material.

Sterling silver plated with gold, also called silver gilt. Used in the 1940s when base metals were not available for jewelry making.
