Overview: Smokey quartz or Smoky quartz is the National Gem of Scotland. Smoky quartz commonly occurs in quartz veins where it crystallizes inside rock cavities known as vugs.

Smoky quartz is a variety of quartz crystal which is variable in colour from brown to black and sometimes grey. Natural smoky quartz often occurs in granite rocks which are exposed to a small but persistent amount of radioactivity.

The Meaning of Smoky Quartz:
It can be used to gently dissolve negative energies and emotional blockages. It can be used to initiate a powerful force field which will absorb many forms of negativity, both from within ones self and from other forces.
Specimens collected at Phoenixville, Ellenville, Case Quarry, NH smoky quartz and many others clean up beautifully with oxalic acid. Zeolites do not respond as well, so you should test beforehand on small specimens to see how they react.
This group includes rock crystal, amethyst, citrine, cairngorm and smoky quartz.
Quartzite
Quartzite is composed of an interlocking mass of quartz crystals with irregular boundaries, produced by metamorphic processes.

Coarsely crystalline varieties, like amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz and others (see below) occur as relatively large, single crystals that can be faceted or cut en cabochon.
Another market for the crystals is as feed material to be irradiated to produce smoky quartz. Most smoky quartz from Arkansas is not natural, but is irradiated rock crystal. Although its not the only U.S.
For many years this name was used incorrectly for the gem smoky quartz. Probably, it started out innocently enough, as many such names do, as a language translation failure, or an inability to correctly identify the species.
Smoky Quartz is tan or brown quartz. Very dark reddish brown smoky quartz is known as cairngorm (from the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland), and black or blackish brown material is known as morion.
Another material that gains a more valuable color by heat treatment is the smoky quartz of Spain, which, on being gently heated, yields the so-called Spanish topaz. Some amethysts are altered to a yellow color by mild heating.
The stone is often confused with smoky quartz due the similar properties and also because of similar chemistry. It is found in Italy, Mexico, Scotland, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Utah and Idaho. The specific gravity is 2.6 and hardness 5 - 5.
Cairngorm is a yellow-brown type of smoky quartz that is often used in traditional Celtic jewelry. Cairngorm is not Scottish topaz.

These stones generally start life as either smoky quartz or amethyst geodes. Heat treatments first turn them clear and then give them a permanent color ranging from yellow to brownish red.
