Sodalite is named in reference to the sodium content it has. It is found in light to dark pure blue color and is well known in the semi-precious stone world.

Sodalite often resembles lapis lazuli, and like it is used in abundance for cabochons and ornamental objects. Some tiny crystals from Namibia have been faceted, but these are quite rare.

SODALITE
Overview: Sodalite was first discovered in 1891 at a deposit near Bancroft, Ontario by Frank D. Sodalite is composed of Sodium Aluminum Silicate Chloride.

Sodalite
Sodalite is a blue mineral composed of sodium, aluminum, silica and choride. It has only been found in limited locations where quartz is absent and has a hardness of 5.5-6.

The components of lapis lazuli include sodalite minerals, calcite, and pyrite. The sodalite minerals are the blue part, the calcite is white, and the pyrite is the "gold flecks" commonly visible in lapis lazuli.

Lapis lazuli is a rock aggregate made up from - predominantly - the minerals lazurite, sodalite, nosalite and hauyne. It has a typical cobalt blue color, often with patches of pyrite (golden) and/ or calcite (white).

Chemical Composition: aggregate of several minerals, including hauyne (which lends the stone its color), sodalite, nosean, and lazurite (a combination of hauyne and sodalite)
Crystal System: the four minerals above belong to the cubic system ...

Lapis Lazuli - a dark blue rock which is composed of several minerals. It contains a large percentage of sodalite. The white color comes from calcite and the sparkling gold flecks come from the pyrite content.

Lapis is considered a rock, not a mineral. It combines various minerals, mostly lazurite, but also contains calcite (white), sodalite (blue) and pyrite (fools' gold, a metallic yellow) and to be considered a mineral it would have only one component.

The characteristic blue comes from sodalite minerals, with any white coming from calcite, and its sparkling gold flecks from pyrite.

Lapis Lazuli is often flecked with golden pyrite, sodalite, and/or calcite inclusions. Lapis lazuli commonly forms as veins or layers in crystalline limestone, as a byproduct of contact, or thermal metamorphism.

Around the Edinburgh - North Berwick - Trapain Law area, pectolite, prehnite and fluorapophyllite (the latter as pyramidal crystals) have been recorded as well as nepheline and sodalite.

Lapis lazuli contains the minerals calcite (which decreases its value), pyrite (which can increase its value), and sodalite. Swiss lapis is not Lapis lazuli at all; it is dyed jasper.

Each of these rhomb-shaped faces intersects two of the axes at equidistance and is parallel to the 3rd axis, thus the notation {011}. The different mineral species of the garnet group often display this form. Magnetite and sodalite sometimes exhibit ...
