Basic Principles of Construction and Soldering
A short review of construction and soldering principles would be a good idea at this point. They're fairly basic.

Soldering Sterling Silver
To help prevent fire scale and melting, turn off your bench light when you solder. This way you can see more accurately what shade of red your pieces are at and know if you are overheating them.

Soldering
A method of joining metal parts or pieces together by melting another metal alloy with a lower melting temperature at the joining point

Soldering
Soldering is a technique, used by jewelers, in making and repairing jewelry.

Soldering Tab: A metal loop (commonly brass) with a small rectangle or square appendage. Used for adding loops to products by soldering or gluing
Solitaire: Generally used to describe a ring with a single center stone, or the stone itself.

Soldering
Using a low melting point alloy to join metals. Tin-lead alloys used to be universal with compositions ranging from the 60% tin/40% lead version used for electrical joints to a 40% tin/60% lead alloy with a long freezing range used for ...

Hard soldering
Soldering metal items together relies on the capillary action of a lower melting point solder flowing between the items to be bonded.

Step 2: Soldering the Filigree Work
The desired pattern is imprinted onto the base, and copper wire that is approximately 1/16 of an inch in diameter is bent into the desired pattern and soldered into place.

Soldering - Technique used in making and repairing jewelry whereby two pieces of metal are joined when a molten metal with a lower melting point than the two metals being joined is used.

Soldering
Joining metals together by melting between them an alloy that flows at a lower temperature than those being joined

Soldering: Uniting pieces of metal by melting between them another kind of metal.
Square: A metal instrument with one bar at a right angle to another, for testing the alignment of work.

No soldering is required to make these metal necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings; they're cold-connected, or crafted with such easy-to-learn skills as piercing, sawing, riveting, and joining, making them perfect for the beginning jeweler.

solder/soldering
A lower-melting-point alloy of the same metal as the workpiece; when heated, solder flows into the spaces between two pieces of metal, forming a bond

Hi Mike, Thanks for the book - I enjoyed the presentation, layout and the way it sets about dispelling a few myths about what soldering is really about...in this era of 'Rambo Fairy Tales'. Kind Regards, Martin Knight-Willis M.C.

It is commonly used in stained and leaded glass manufacture as a flux and tinning agent for irons used in the soldering process.

If your beaded jewellery required soldering or hammering wires, a pair of safety glasses is handy.

Gold-filled A gold alloy plate made by soldering, brazing, welding or other means that is not less than 10Kt fineness, where the plating constitutes at lest 1/20th of the weight of the metal in the entire article.

Realize Our Diversity: Because the subject of jewelry making covers anything from glass bead making to soldering to crochet, it's important to realize that there are all kinds of jewelry makers who visit our forum.

Check the soldering. This is always a dead giveaway for less than acceptable craftsmanship.
Pick many styles, you can literally never have too many earrings. Diamond studs can go with business suits, blue jeans and cocktail dresses.

Gold Filled - An item with a sheet of gold applied to its surface by soldering, welding, pressure or heat. Newer items contain markings that indicate how much and what type of gold was used in the layer. A marking of 1/20 12k G. F.

flux - a substance used to promote fusion by preventing oxidation at the point of soldering, thus enabling the solder to flow. When soldering gold and silver, a solution of borax or "self-pickling flux" is used.

Binding
Two or more metal part are fixed together with a metal wire, for soldering.
Birefringence
The measurements (the high and low index) taken by double refractive stones of light travel (except optic axis) with different speed trough the crystal.

Granulation: Minute gold spheres chemically bonded to a gold surface by a fusion method and not necessarily soldering.

A bezel setting is a technique of setting a stone in jewelry. The stone is held in place by first soldering the bezel, or metal ring, to the base of the piece. Next, the stone is inserted and the metal is compressed tightly around the stone.

Borax
Borax is a cone-shaped flux which is ground in a ceramic borax dish and used in the soldering process
Box and Tongue Clasp

Solder - to attach bases, bowl bodies, fittings or handles by fusing metallic surfaces together with a soldering iron.
Special - non-standard production pieces available only through Lenox retail outlets.

pickle - A chemical solution used to remove oxides and flux after soldering metal.

soluble in HCl, from the Greek words "chrynos" and "kolla" which mean "gold" and "glue". It was similar in color to a material used in gold soldering in ancient times.

The heat produced when soldering the setting can cause fissures along cleavage planes and may lead to the gem actually breaking along these fissures (Schumann, 1997, p. 22).

In jewellery terms this usually refers to a decorative metal component with an open lace-like structure which is formed by soldering bent wire into delicate designs or alternatively stamping or casting metal into predefined shapes.

One way to prevent fire scale is to coat the entire piece you are working on with flux. As the flux dries when you are soldering, it will create a glass that forms a barrier between the copper and the oxygen.

Riveting: A method of joining two objects together by making a hole in each piece, then passing a screw (composed of the same metal as the piece), through the holes to join the parts. This process was used in jewelry instead of soldering when it ...

Overlay unites one surface onto another surface chemically through an additional substance such as soldering when joining metal to metal or an adhesive/cement when joining metal to nonmetal (such as gemstones or shell).

by making a hole in each piece, then passing a pin with a large flat head, (composed of the same metal as the piece), through the holes. The pin is then pounded flat to secure it in place. This process was used in jewelry instead of soldering when it ...

Indonesian cast components are also finished by hand-a process that includes forming and soldering jump rings, oxidizing, cleaning, and polishing. The master mold for the casting of components is also carved by hand. No two pieces are exactly alike.

Likewise, the backs of pins and earring posts should be strong and firmly attached to the piece with no soldering marks visible. With gold chain, lay it flat and make sure the links don't kink or bend.
