Jewelry Spessartite garnetSphene

Sphalerite is an unusual rare gemstone which is craved for by people as it possesses more brilliance than diamonds. It gets its name from the Greek word which means "unfaithful rock", which was given in the year 1847 by E. F. Glocker .

Sphalerite (ZnS) is a mineral that is the chief ore of zinc. It consists largely of zinc sulfide in crystalline form but almost always contains variable iron. When iron content is high it is an opaque black variety, marmatite ((Zn,Fe)S).

Low specific gravity distinguishes it from galena, as does colour. Lustre also indicative.

An alteration product of sphalerite, it occurs with other zinc minerals, particularly smithsonite, from which it is distinguished by its strong pyroelectricity. Fluoresces bright orange in LW UV.

Primary sulfide minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite are in particular vulnerable to oxidization and alteration.
